The core algorithms of our products were developed and refined during PhD work by Founder & CTO Sergei Lupashin at the Flying Machine Arena at ETH, Zurich. Frustrated by overly complicated existing systems, he set out to build something more robust, and eventually arrived at using a taut tether to sidestep fundamental drone limitations. The Fotokite Team continues to build on this foundation to create fully autonomous and turn-key solutions, creating the next generation of situational awareness tools that help first responders stay safer while doing their high-impact jobs.

As mentioned above, the unique and patented aspect of Vayu’s Courier is it’s ability to take off vertically like a helicopter – then transition to efficient aircraft flight for the duration of the transit – then land vertically again. It does this highly versatile feat completely without a pilot; the aircraft is pilot-free. All flight planning, navigation, takeoff and landing is done automatically. This combination of quadcopter/fixed wing design in association with advanced pilot free operation removes the need for heavy infrastructure like launchers and runways. The smartphone application is easy enough for a nurse or community health worker to launch, receive and plan deliveries without any training.
